As a tribute to the Chinese zodiac, Caran d’Ache is celebrating the Year of the Monkey.

The Maison Caran d’Ache pays tribute to sophisticated arts in the “Chinese Calendar” collection, designed to revive the legend of the Chinese zodiac signs. The most recent creation, the limited edition “Year of the Monkey”, is issued as part of this exceptional line of writing instruments to celebrate the corresponding Chinese year in 2016.

Legend has it that on New Year’s Eve, the powerful Jade Emperor called all the animals to a mysterious gathering while promising them a special offering. Only 12 of them responded to the invitation. According to the order in which they arrived, the Emperor then attributed to each a year that would be dedicated to them and bear their name.

Endowed with a thirst for learning and a vivid imagination, the monkey is one of the most creative signs of the Chinese zodiac. These passionate beings have a creative mind and love a good challenge. Their intelligence and proven cleverness nurture social relationships, thus promising an exceptionally ingenious year.

Pursuing the aesthetic approach of the preceding limited editions, dedicated to the symbols of the Chinese zodiac, the “Year of the Monkey” resurrects the splendor of authentic Chinese lacquer.

The animated figure of the monkey leaps out in yellow Chinese lacquer on a glossy black background that has been patiently applied layer after layer according to ancestral tradition. The monkey’s shimmering coat, its agile long arms and expressive face are depicted with the utmost delicacy on the body of the pen, presenting a design that is typically Asian in character. Each writing instrument is authenticated with the calligraphic sign of the monkey and the Chinese stamp of the Maison Caran d’Ache, applied in red as a token of good luck.

Long nurtured in the Caran d’Ache workshops, the ancestral art of Chinese lacquer is combined with the technical reliability of the writing instruments to unveil its incomparable hues after numerous, meticulous polishes.

The outline of the monkey in yellow Chinese lacquer stands out against a background of brilliant black Chinese lacquer. Its relaxed posture and the waves of its rich coat can be seen in the dynamic contrast between the colors and the superior materials used. To ensure absolute authenticity, the Geneva-based company obtained the services of a master calligrapher to apply the Chinese ideogram of the monkey onto the body of the pen.

The “Year of the Monkey” limited edition follows on from that depicting the sign of the goat in the “Chinese Calendar” thematic collection, designed to perpetuate the mythology of the Chinese zodiac.

In the pure tradition of Chinese Lacquer
Known since the 14th century BC, the art of Chinese lacquer was developed during the reign of the Shang dynasty. The natural material comes from the sap of the Rhus Vernicifera tree, which originates from tropical Asia. Entirely executed by hand, the meticulous successive applications of fine layers of lacquer require infinite patience. The careful polishing of each writing instrument, also done by hand, reveals its incomparable reflections with this final touch.

The mastering of this ancestral technique and the immense skill with regard to precision engraving enables the master craftsmen of Caran d’Ache to create designs in complete freedom, while maintaining the integrity of the lacquered surface.
