As a tribute to the Chinese zodiac, Caran d’Ache is celebrating the Year of the Goat.

Caran d’Ache pays tribute to refined arts and revives the legend of the Chinese zodiac symbols. The “Year of the Goat”, produced as a limited edition, is part of an exceptional line of writing instruments designed to celebrate the Year of the Goat in 2015.

Legend has it that on the eve of the New Year, the Jade Emperor called all the animals to a mysterious meeting, promising them a special offering. Just 12 of them answered his invitation. According to the order in which they arrived, the Emperor then attributed to each in turn a year that would be dedicated to them and bear their name.

Endowed with a lively spirit and mischievous intelligence, the goat fosters creativity, the imagination and refined artistry. Dreamy and inspired by nature, it is on a perpetual quest for inner peace and beauty.

Pursuing the aesthetic approach of the preceding limited editions, dedicated to the symbols of the Chinese zodiac, the “Year of the Goat” resurrects the splendor of authentic Chinese lacquer.

The vigorous silhouette of the goat stands out against the glossy black lacquered background, patiently applied, layer after layer, according to the ancestral tradition. Carefully engraved on the body of the pen, the animal’s abundant fleece, its head complete with silver-plated and rhodium-coated horns feature a design conveying a typically Asian expression. In a discreet reminder, the tone-on-tone silhouettes of two goats are finely engraved on the body of each writing instrument. The attributes of the pens, bearing the distinctive marks of the Maison Caran d’Ache, as well as engraved individual numbers, are adorned in yellow gold. The combination of gold and silver is an indication of high esteem in Asia.

Every writing instrument is authenticated by the calligraphic sign of the goat and by the Chinese seal of the Maison Caran d’Ache, applied in red, the bearer of good fortune.

Its corrugated fleece and expressive body reveal a wonderfully free design and perfect mastery of engraving. A longstanding tradition in Caran d’Ache workshops, the art of Chinese lacquer blends perfectly with the technical reliability of these writing instruments, revealing its deep reflections after careful polishing.

As proof of its authenticity, the Geneva Manufacture has called upon a master of calligraphy to affix the Chinese sign of the goat to this writing instrument.

Known since the 14th century BC, the art of Chinese lacquer was developed during the reign of the Shang dynasty. The natural material comes from the sap of the Rhus Vernicifera tree, which originates from tropical Asia. Entirely executed by hand, the meticulous successive applications of fine layers of lacquer require infinite patience. The careful polishing of each writing instrument, also done by hand, reveals its incomparable reflections with this final touch.

The mastering of this ancestral technique and the immense skill with regard to precision engraving enables the master craftsmen of Caran d’Ache to create designs in complete freedom, while maintaining the integrity of the lacquered surface.
