Tibaldi Introduces: Sovereign Military Order of Malta Pens

The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (commonly known as the "Order of Malta") is a lay, religious order of the Catholic Church. It is a Hospitaller order, founded in Jerusalem during the eleventh century. Members of the Order seek to glorify God through his or her work with the sick and the poor and witness of the Catholic faith. There are approximately 12,500 Knights and Dames of Malta around the world. They belong to one of 58 national associations or priories.

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) pen by TIBALDI is a precious work of art, finely etched with a pattern reproducing the coat of mail in medieval armors. The cap also features a sleek image of a Maltese knight at the back, above a discreet engraving panel, allowing personalization with end-user's name or initials. The most famous symbol associated to the Order, the Maltese cross, decorates the barrel. It is hand-painted by our skilled artist, Lorena Straffi. All trims, either in solid 18K gold or sterling silver, contrast nicely with the carnelian stone adorning the cap's ornament.

ORDER OF MALTA NIB

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM)'s striking nib is in 18K yellow gold, partly rhodium-plated and engraved with the image of the Maltese cross. Rhodium is only applied inside the contours of the cross and inside the words, requiring the skill of an experienced goldsmith. The iridium point is welded to the gold and shaped according to the writing grade desired. Like the original TIBALDI nibs from the early twentieth century, each nib is engraved with the guarantee of first-class writing quality, “1a Qualità”. The thickness of gold varies across the nib to maximize flexibility and thereby the writer's comfort. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta Fountain Pen is only available in Medium (M).

DISTINCTIVE CLIP

The tie-shaped clip is reminiscent of TIBALDI pens from the early 1900s, but its sophisticated snap mechanism and roller make it easier to insert into a pocket. Thanks to extensive engineering research and laboratory testing, the clip is mounted on the ring, rather than on the cap. The clip as well as every other element is carved with the help of advanced computer-operated lathe and milling machines.

JEWELER'S FINISHED TRIM

The Clou de Paris, consisting of repeating pyramid patterns, is an ancient decorative design, existing since the 16th century. In the 18th century, it was introduced into the watch industry as an elegant way to hide scratches and extend the life of metal surfaces. Each face of the pyramid is processed on two axes, resulting in a design with a high visual impact resembling a diamond shape and similarly reflecting the light. The work is extremely difficult and requires high-precision technology and instruments. The name most likely comes from the basalt stones used to pave Parisian cobblestone streets.

All the precious metal Clou de Paris components are produced and galvanized in Switzerland, the country responsible for producing the world's finest watches. Each part is inspected and hallmarked by the Swiss Federal Customs Office for the Control of Precious Metals in Geneva, a guarantee of the origin and high quality of the materials and finish. The Swiss hallmark is the only procedure of its type recognized all over the world.

These superb writing instruments are cased in elegant wooden boxes finished with glossy red lacquer and inlaid with a mother-of-pearl Maltese cross on the lid.

The number of units produced comes from 1530, being the year when the knights of the order settled in Malta.

In fact, 1 + 530 writing instruments will be manufactured: 1 extraordinary pen, which will be auctioned in support of a charity foundation + 530 pens available for sale.
