In 1972, a French newspaper journalist decided to toast the new year by tagging good news with a yellow smiley face. His idea caught on. Fifty years later, Smiley® is a pop icon and global byword for positivity. A special artistic collaboration salutes the power of symbols with Smiley® 50th Anniversary.

Smiley® 50th Anniversary is a one-off anniversary edition that uses art by André Saraiva to celebrate five decades of positive vibes. Bright yellow graffiti translates the original banner that greeted readers of France-Soir in 1972: “Prenez le temps de sourire.”

Artistic expression and subversion have always been part of the Smiley® oeuvre. For this limited-edition release, a spray-paint icon cap and André’s freehand slogan lend a smile to our signature ZERO silhouette. Edition number and artist’s signature are engraved in metal.

An extra dose of happiness lies in store for fountain pen users, with the icon’s beaming grin engraved into a custom 14K yellow gold nib. Fuel it – and your imagination – with a complimentary bottle of special-edition ink.
