Zötl
A humble dyer from eighteenth century Austria, Aloys Zötl, reproduced in watercolours animals that he had only seen in natural history books, but these lifeless images did not satisfy him and so he created fantastical backgrounds to match the grace, ferocity, form and colour of each animal. André Breton discovered Zötl’s fabulous zoo in the 1950s, when a dealer brought the albums, which were then dispersed in two auctions, to Paris. Only after a long search was it possible to recreate Zötl’s rich and many-coloured menagerie. Breton was aided by a young surrealist writer and follower, Vincent Bounoure. Julio Cortázar, a master of fantastical literature, completes this walk amongst the cages.
