Description
Caran d'Ache pays tribute to the Tretyakov State Gallery
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow, Caran d'Ache, Maison de Haute Ecriture, has drawn on all its expertise to create a special case containing a fountain pen and a ballpoint pen in a limited edition. It is a tribute to the famous gallery and its founder, the art lover Pavel Tretyakov.
Three years after honouring the City of St Petersburg on its 300th anniversary in 2003, Caran d'Ache, Maison de Haute Ecriture, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow. It has created a pair of exceptional writing instruments for art lovers and collectors. Their design is inspired by the architectural details and the warm colours of the famous gallery's brick facade, the work of the Russian artist Viktor Wasnetsov, in pure Neo-Russian style.
Caran d'Ache and architecture
Because each word adds another building block in expressing the Caran d'Ache culture, special emphasis is given to the art of construction in its many forms. True to its long historical and artistic tradition, the company has always reflected architectural trends, notably in its legendary fountain pens such as "La Modernista" (2000) with its modernist inspiration, "La Gotica" (2003) with its gothic influences, and the "Mario Botta for Caran d'Ache" with its roots in the Bauhaus style. It is quite natural for Caran d'Ache to return to this theme once again this year and expand its collection dedicated to architecture.
Tretyakov Writing Instruments
The case dedicated to the Tretyakov State Gallery contains a fountain pen and a ballpoint pen. Both instruments are produced in 150 pieces and each is numbered individually (001/150 to 150/150) on the cap (fountain pen) and the pushbutton (ballpoint pen). (Tretyakov in Russian) is engraved on each writing instrument.
The body and cap of the fountain pen are gold-plated and its 18 carat gold nib is partially coated in rhodium. The CdA symbol is engraved on the nib which is available in three writing thicknesses (F, M and B). The pen works equally well with an ink pump or cartridges.
The ballpoint is also gold-plated, and fitted with the famous Caran d'Ache Goliath giant cartridge which has a writing capacity of 600 A4 pages.
Two techniques have been carefully combined to enhance the body and the cap of these writing instruments: hand-applied lacquer and engraving. They work beautifully together in producing and colouring the skylight-and-lozenge motif that decorates the pens. This motif has been inspired by the design of the six windows in the faƧade of the gallery's central building. The warm colours of lacquered sections recall the red of the bricks that are laid in a decorative pattern as counterpoint to the white elements in the facade of the principal building.
The Tretyakov Presention Case
The two writing instruments are presented in a luxurious wooden case made of fine teak in a highly refined design. The lid suggests the outline of the gallery and mentions its foundation year of 1856. The interior is lined with white fabric, recalling the partially white facade of the gallery and contrasting beautifully with the two instruments inside.
The Tretyakov State Gallery
The gallery was founded in 1856 by Pavel Mikhailovitch Tretyakov (1832-1898), an industrialist and a great art lover who left some 2000 works of Russian Art from his private collection to the City of Moscow in 1892. He wanted to create a space devoted to Russian art that would be open to the public so that anybody could see and appreciate it.
The museum is one of the most important in the world today, with a collection of more than 130,000 works from Russian artists paintings and sculptures as well as graphic arts.
