Hexagonal Carbon Fibre Silver Plated Pens by Caran D'Ache

Squares and cubes are also classic examples of geometry in its purest form, and have long featured in the works of architects and artists. For the adornment of the 2002 edition of its "Hexagonal" and "Lighter" Collections, the Swiss manufacturer Caran d'Ache has developed a new engraving pattern baptized "Cubes". Straight vertical and horizontal grooves are engraved on the six faces of each of the four writing instruments and on the front and back of the lighter, forming a succession of squares. The top of each square is satin-finished and this, together with the depth of the grooves, creates the impression of "cubes". The name of the design is derived from the engraving pattern.

The Cubes Hexagonal Collection includes a fountain pen, a rollerball, a ballpoint pen, a mechanical pencil and a lighter. Their brass bodies are silver plated with a rhodium finish. The long, flat clip of the four pens is made of a bronze-beryllium alloy â€“ also silver plated and rhodium-coated â€“ and carries a small plate engraved with the "CdA" monogram.

The fountain pen with the Cubes design has a rhodium-coated, 18-carat gold nib, available in three widths (F, M and B). The pen works with either an ink-pump or cartridges. The roller pen can be fitted with a rollerball or a fibre-tipped cartridge, according to the writer's needs. Both pens have a rounded metal writing grip with lacquered sections.

The ballpoint pen has a high-precision pushbutton mechanism and is equipped with the trusty Goliath giant cartridge, providing 600 A4 pages of smudge-free writing. The mechanical pencil, also activated by a pushbutton, takes 0.7 mm leads.

The Cubes motif also now features in Caran dâ€™Ache Lighter Collection, first launched in 1978. These lighters are a triumph of precision engineering. They have a reserve gas supply â€“ a Caran d'Ache patent â€“, which can be switched on when the main reservoir is empty.
