Theatrum Sanitatis. Liber magistri. (primo volume) IIn the XIV and XV centuries, works that we would today call “illustrated medical encyclopaedias” were known as “Tacuini” or “Theatra Sanitatis”. The European aristocracy, who had not long before left the monopoly on literature to clergymen, now discovered its pleasures and commissioned sumptuous illustrated works that contained the culture of the times. Schematic notes condensed current medical knowledge, taken from classical and Arabic medicine and from the precepts of a primitive pharmacopoeia, from which both branches had grown. The Theatrum Sanitatis, attributed to the Arab Ububchasym de Baldach, has been re-published for the enjoyment of art students, doctors and bibliophiles.

Theatrum Sanitatis. Liber magistri. (secondo volume) “Tacuini” o “Theatra Sanitatis” si chiamarono, nel XIV e XV secolo, opere che oggi de?niremmo “enciclopedie mediche illustrate”. L’aristocrazia europea, che sino a non molto tempo prima aveva lasciato agli ecclesiastici il monopolio della lettura, ora ne scopriva i piaceri e commissionava sontuosi codici nei quali era riassunta la cultura del tempo. Schematiche didascalie condensavano le cognizioni mediche correnti, attinte alla medicina classica e a quella araba, e in?ne ai dettami di una farmacopea primitiva sul cui tronco entrambe erano cresciute. Attribuito all’arabo Ububchasym de Baldach, il Theatrum Sanitatis della Biblioteca Casanatense di Roma è stato ripubblicato per il piacere dello studioso d’arte, del medico colto, del biblio?lo.
