 Description
Italia Asburgica I. Trentino e Tirolo meridionale (1700-1918)
An ecclesiastical principality passed down to the Hapsburgs and secularised in 1803, Trento was happily secluded from the ruinous episodes of history and until the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire, of which it was one of the tourist jewels, visited by monarchs and archdukes, managed to conserve its sweet provincial mountain calm, rarely disturbed by the rumblings of the Risorgimento.

Italia Asburgica II. Contee di Gorizia e Gradisca (1700-1918)
Trieste became a Frankish port, thanks to the maritime expansion of the Emperor CharlesVI, who founded a short-lived Eastern Company, which should have rivalled the English East India Company. In the eighteen hundreds, Trieste was transformed into one of the richest and most self-assured cities in Europe, the cosmopolitan financial capital of the Hapsburg Empire, populated by Slovenians, Italians, Greeks, Jews and Armenians. Together with the seaside towns of Istria and the pretty little villages of its inland regions, it was the jewel in the crown of a much-mourned multinational State that disappeared, together with a whole era, in the catastrophe of the First World War.

Repubblica di Venezia I. Dogado (1700-1797)
The amphibious Serenissima, damp capital of a fossil republic governed by an aristocracy terrified of any innovation, a city of gambling houses and brothels, travelled by silent and mysterious black gondolas and populated by nobles in cloaks and masks, sharp-eyed secret agents intent on spying on its vices, watchful state inquisitors, arrogant senators, deceitful ambassadors, treacherous adventurers, brawny shipyard workers, Jewish and Armenian merchants, Albanian and Slavonian militia.

Repubblica di Venezia II. Stato di Terraferma (1700-1797)
Venice ruled with a wise but immobile hand from the Adda to the Isonzo, from the Cadore to the Po, over a vast spread of mountains and plains dotted with the marvellous villas of its aristocracy, from which it took trees for its vessels, grain for its citizens and silks for its by now languishing commerce. The panorama of the eighteenth century Venetian terraferma is drawn here by the masterful hand of travellers such as de Brosses and Goethe, and by the governors themselves in their reports to the Senate, who tell, with the terrorised amazement of the innocent victim, of the raids by French revolutionary forces in the peaceful countryside of St. Mark.

Repubblica di Venezia III. Stato da Mar (1700-1797)
At the beginning of the seventeen hundreds, the maritime holdings of the Republic of Venice included the whole Peleponese, the Ionic Islands, Dalmatia and Austria. This volume tells of the easy Turkish conquest of Venetian Greece in 1715 and is narrated by an excellent witness, the French interpreter to the Grand Vizier Ali Pasha; while Giocoso Casanova and Carlo Gossip, who were respectively garrisoned on Corfu and Zara, describe the daily life of the Venetian governors in their dominions overseas. Other texts tell us of the economy, customs, and habits of the Istrians and Dalmatians.
