Ducato di Modena e Reggio (1700-1860)
The Duchy of Modena was a little state situated between the Apennines, reaching from the Po to the Tyrrhenian, onto which it faces with a scrap of beach at Massa. It barely scraped by in the eighteenth century under the paternal and inattentive government of the last of the Estense family. In the nineteenth century, under Frances IV of Este, it became the most reactionary state in Europe, in which Dante and matches were banned and with a duke who horrified the Tsar by asking permission to send his rebellious subjects to Siberia

Ducato di Parma, Piacenza e Guastalla (1731-1860)
Once the Farnese disappeared, Parma was inherited by the Bourbons of Spain and under Duke Philip, to the credit of the genial minister Du Tillot, it became so well governed and cultured that it was called "the Athens of Italy”. After the fall of the Napoleonic empire, it was doubly blessed by the indulgent government of Marie Louise of Austria, still remembered today as the Good Duchess and by her morganatic second husband the Count of Neipperg. It later returned to the Bourbons, the last of whom, the bizarre and sensual genius Charles III, was assassinated in the public square.

Regno Italico (1806-1814)
The short-lived Italian kingdom of Napoleon, governed by his stepson, Eugène de Beauharnais, extended from Sesia to Istria and from Bolzano to Ancona. Here are the court ceremonies, including the spectacular coronation of Napoleon with the Iron Crown, narrated by a malicious eye-witness, the building of the State on the ruins of the Ancien Régime, the development of society and economy, the rise of the bourgeoisie and the new military nobility and the final catastrophe with the terrifying lynching of the minister Prina, hated creator of taxes.

Regno Lombardo-Veneto I. Delegazioni lombarde (1815-1859)
Held in a velvet glove by Metternich and in an iron fist by Radetzky, the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, creation of the Vienna Congress, was the last attempt of an international idea that would finally fall under the blows of growing nationalism. This volume tells of the Lombardy of the first half of the 19th century and is told above all from the Austrian side, in the reports of viceroys, marshals, functionaries and officials, amazed by the unexplainable Italian revolt against their excellent administration.

Regno Lombardo-Veneto II. Delegazioni Venete (1815-1866)
Venice, maritime pearl of the Austrian empire and military port of its fleets, destination of romantic visitors in search of the hypnotic suggestion of its lagoons and of archdukes convinced that costume balls and sumptuous aquatic processions would win the love of their subjects. The transitory re-birth of the Republic, the epic siege of 1849 and the long twilight of Hapsburg power in Italy.
