 Description
Qajar
From 1797 to 1834, Fath Alì, second sovereign of the Qajar dynasty, reigned over Persia. He was famous for the beauty of his face, illuminated by languid dark brown eyes and framed by a bushy Assyrian-style beard (of which he was as proud as of his 159 sons). This monarch, the last oriental potentate in the tradition of Sardanapalo and Suliman the Great, was surrounded by a team of court painters who reproduced his image, together with that of his sons, ministers and dancers in painting upon painting. Lost for decades in dusty bazaars and private collections, these courtiers and courtesans are once more united around their Shah, recreating in the magic of the images and elegance of the text the luxury of nineteenth century Iran, land of roses and severed heads.

Qajar
