Description
Oltremare
After rounding the terrible Cape of Storms (rebaptised the Cape of Good Hope in order to exorcise it) in November 1497, Vasco da Gama’s fleet touched the longed-for coast of India the following May. Considered little more than nasty barbarians by the Indian princes, the audacious Portuguese navigators had within a few years managed to build a maritime empire that stretched from the Atlantic to the Sea of China, draining the riches of Asia that soon accumulated on the quays of Lisbon. The story of their marvellous and bloody feats live again in the pages of this Book of the Orient by Duarte Barbosa, a 16th-century guide to the East and in the naïve images executed towards the end of the century by an anonymous Portuguese artist, illustrating the bizarre customs of the people who had recently submitted to his king.

Oltremare
