Oltremare After rounding the terrible Cape of Storms (rebaptised the Cape of Good Hope in order to exorcise it) in November 1497, Vasco da Gama’s fleet touched the longed-for coast of India the following May. Considered little more than nasty barbarians by the Indian princes, the audacious Portuguese navigators had within a few years managed to build a maritime empire that stretched from the Atlantic to the Sea of China, draining the riches of Asia that soon accumulated on the quays of Lisbon. The story of their marvellous and bloody feats live again in the pages of this Book of the Orient by Duarte Barbosa, a 16th-century guide to the East and in the naïve images executed towards the end of the century by an anonymous Portuguese artist, illustrating the bizarre customs of the people who had recently submitted to his king.

Oltremare Doppiato nel novembre 1497 il tremendo Capo delle Tempeste, ribattezzato per esorcizzarlo Capo di Buona Speranza, la flotta di Vasco da Gama toccò nel maggio seguente l’agognata costa dell’India. Stimati poco più che barbari molesti dai raffinati principi indiani, gli audaci navigatori portoghesi riuscirono in pochi anni a costruire un impero marittimo esteso dall’Atlantico al Mar della Cina, drenando le ricchezze dell’Asia che andarono accumulandosi sui moli di Lisbona. La storia delle loro imprese mirabili e sanguinarie rivive in queste pagine nel testo del Libro dell’Oriente di Duarte Barbosa, “guida” cinquecentesca all’Oriente, e nelle ingenue, affascinanti immagini eseguite sul finire del secolo da un anonimo lusitano per illustrare i bizzarri costumi dei popoli di recente sottomessi al suo re.
