Napoleone Apocrifo
In 1836, a few years before the triumphal return to France of Napoleon’s ashes, the bizarre ingenuity of one Louis Geoffroy wanted to imagine what would have happened if the Great Corsican, instead of retreating from Moscow, had aimed for St. Petersburg. This is only the first act in an amazing series of victories and defeats, which take the Emperor from London to Constantinople, from India to China and from Algeria to Cairo in an irresistible crescendo that concludes with a magnificent final apotheosis. Alongside Geoffroy’s text, the pompous official portraits of the Bonaparte family and the Napoleonic entourage that richly illustrate the volume acquire an equally ironic value.

Napoleone apocrifo
