 Description

Morris Hirshfield
In 1937, a sixty-four-year old slipper manufacturer from New York City, a Polish Jew named Morris Hirshfield, who at eighteen had come to live in the new Promised Land and was now enjoying the fruits of his pension, was dazzled by a white Angora cat and decided to paint it. From that time on, until the day of his death, Hirshfield painted around seventy pictures of lionesses, kittens and many female nudes using imagination (or memory) instead of models and avoiding scoldings from his wife by using clever mirror effects. This volume has Morris Hirshfield interviewed by William Saroyan, the great American naïf writer, who adds him to the cast of characters in his famous human comedy.

Morris Hirshfield
