 Description

Minnesänger
Among over three million manuscripts in the library of Heidelberg, ex capital of the Rhineland Palatinate and home of the oldest German university, there is a codex that is both a milestone in Germanic literature and a masterpiece of Gothic illumination. It is known as the Manessischen Handschrift, or Manesse Manuscript, from the name of the Manesse family of Zurich, which commissioned it. It is also known as the Minnesänger Manuscript, as it is a collection (the largest we have) of the singers of love songs or troubadours of ancient Germany. There are 6000 verses by 140 poets of the third and fourth centuries. The 138 illuminations portray the authors, in hierarchical order, from the Emperor Henry VI, son of Barbarossa, down through princes, counts, lords and gentlemen.
