 Description

Ligabue
Along the Po, from Guastalla to Luzzara and Suzzara, are the countryside, woods and flood plains in which Antonio Ligabue hid himself away and painted for over forty years. His mother was from Friuli, he was born in Switzerland in 1899 and died in 1965 in Gualtieri. Luzzara, which lies for more than half the year in the fog that rises from the river and for the other half in the suffocating heat of the Padania, is also the home of Cesare Zavattini who has written the long, surprising and impassioned story in this volume. In his pictures and especially the self-portraits, Ligabue manifests the anguish, repugnance and traumas that dominated his life and destiny. Some of these manifestations were, without doubt, due to madness, but what artist does not have a mad streak?

Ligabue
