Description
Libro delle visioni
On the endless plains of Poland in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the death of a magnate was an occasion for magnificent ceremonies that could last months and were held in several places, using hundreds of pieces of colossal scenic machinery. The central character of the performance, the Deceased, was portrayed in effigy above the coffin, dominating immense catafalques and gazing on the bystanders from post mortem portraits painted for the occasion by humble and anonymous specialised artists. This images of the world beyond are presented for the first time to a Western audience, accompanied by literature from the sorrowful kingdom of the dead, chosen by the master of visions and dreams Jorge Luis Borges and including one of his own stories, written for this volume.
