I Turchi. Codex Vindobonensis 8626 In the eyes of Europeans, the Turks have been a source of curiosity, horror and pleasantly wicked fantasy for centuries, especially for the ruling classes. It is therefore natural that a man like von Pezzen, ambassador to Constantinople from 1586 to 1591, wanted to describe Turkish habits and customs to his lord, the Emperor of Austria. He employed an unknown painter to record the scenes and characters that once animated the streets of Istanbul. The result was a volume of images that belonged for many years to the Emperors of Austria and was then conserved in the National Library of Vienna. It is here available to the public for the first time and is accompanied by an anthology of writing by travellers and curious Europeans from the last four centuries.

I Turchi. Codex Vindobonensis 8626 Per secoli i Turchi sono stati, agli occhi degli Europei, fonte di curiosità, di raccapriccio e di fantasticherie piacevolmente nefande, soprattutto presso le classi dirigenti. Naturale quindi che un uomo come il von Pezzen, ambasciatore a Costantinopoli tra il 1586 e il 1591, volesse rendere conto al suo Signore, l’imperatore d’Austria, degli usi e costumi turcheschi. Per questo egli incaricò un pittore, a noi ignoto, che ritrasse le s?late, i personaggi, le scene che animavano al tempo le vie di Istanbul. Ne risultò un volume di immagini, appartenuto a lungo agli imperatori d’Austria e poi conservato presso la Biblioteca Nazionale di Vienna, che qui per la prima volta è reso accessibile al pubblico, accompagnato da un’antologia di testi di viaggiatori e ?ccanaso europei degli ultimi quattro secoli.
