Hackert
Like many foreign artists, the painter Jakob Philipp Hackert, born in 1737 in a little town in the March of Brandenburg, came to Italy several times to study the great masters of the past and to practise his speciality: landscapes. Luck and talent brought him to Naples in 1782, to the court of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who took such a liking to his work that he showered him with commissions and named him court painter four years later. As well as that of the sovereign, Hackert also enjoyed the esteem and friendship of his illustrious compatriot Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who met him during his travels in Italy and who, after his death in Florence in 1807, used his notes to write about his life.

Hackert
