Erté
Erté: these four letters (or rather these two letters, as Erté is the French transcription of the letters R and T, the initials of the artist, theatre and fashion designer Romain de Tirtoff) are today an almost unknown monogram. His name came to public attention for the first time in 1913 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris, where a dancer destined to become part of mythology appeared: Mata Hari. Erté, the young unknown Russian designer who had recently arrived in Paris, created the costumes. The show was an enormous success. Two years later, he designed the first cover for “Harper’s Bazaar” and America was enthusiastic. He created the fashion and the woman of the age and invented and captured the myths of the Roaring Twenties. This volume, published in 1970, began the rediscovery of Erté.
