El-Fayyum
Apart from a few frescoes from cities buried by the great eruption of Vesuvius and from other areas of minor archaeological importance, the only organic corpus of paintings to have come down to us from antiquity is that of the so-called “portraits of mummies” from the Faiyum region of Egypt. They were placed on the face of the deceased, framed by the bands that wrapped the whole body. The prosperous society of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt traditionally kept the mummies, with portraits of their relatives, at home for some time – presumably in a suitable “room of ancestors”. The same irreparably alive Mediterranean faces, which gazed through the bandages, now parade through these pages for our admiration and consternation

El-Fayyum
