Description
Delacroix al Marocco
Delacroix’s discovery of Morocco goes back to 1831, when he was called to be part, as official artist, of the mission of the Conte di Mornay, sent by King Louis Phillipe to negotiate with the sultan. The text, in the form of a private letter to Delacroix, is entrusted to the pen of Tahar Ben Jelloun, considered the greatest living Moroccan writer and it evokes the strong impact that the light, colours, customs and dress, the beauty and also the violence of Morocco had on the spirit of the painter, on his works and in consequence on the whole of nineteenth century European art. The volume is completed with a stimulating anthology of texts on nineteenth century Morocco edited by Gianni Guadalupi, a great expert on Arab culture, which draws an outline of the Morocco of the era, re-evoking singular anecdotes that are both very significant and still relevant today.
