Description
Carnet dŽAdress. The Golf
Lore tells us that golf was invented six centuries ago by a Scottish shepherd. In order to entertain himself while his flock grazed, he would hit a round stone around a mewdow, across dithes and over shrubs. in the ninteenth century when the game spread alla around the world, a number of cultures laid claim to its origin. When in 1603 James VI, king of Scotland, succeeded Elizabeth to the throne of England and moved to London from Edimburgh, he also brought with him the game of golf, which gentlemen in his entourage began to play at Blackheath. The rules, which were later more rigorously codified in 1754 by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, were those humorously illustrated by the hand of Charles Crombie (1885-1967). This series of litogrphs printed in London in 1905 circa, recreates the atmosphere of Jacobean England before the civil war, with these peaceable golfers all caught up in their interminable rounds.
