Description
Candido Lopez
The war in Paraguay was the bloodiest of the XIX century and the Argentinian painter Cándido López was its meticulous chronicler. He wanted to paint it as it had been in reality – nothing in his work was to be casual. To carry out this task he relied on his memory, his sketches from life and his left hand (having lost the right in battle). From the dust of the two most important museums in Buenos Aires an Argentinian expert, Marta Dujovne, has taken the paintings of López and the war diary reproduced in this volume and has added a biographical and critical study. López served under the victors. A son of the conquered was the great Paraguayan writer Augusto Roa Bastos, who recounts the last days of Paraguay and the death of the tyrant Solano López.

Candido Lopez
