 Description

Arcimboldo
Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who was born around 1527 and who died in 1593, lived for a great deal of time at the courts of Vienna and Prague, in the service of Ferdinand I, Maximillian II and finally Rudolph II, “the solitary” of Prague, a collector of art and curios, a mad, disturbed man and owner of the celebrated “cabinet of curiosities”. These were the years of mannerism and Arcimboldo was a mannerist who composed heads made of flowers, fruit, books, animals and kitchen implements. In this volume, Archimbolo’s still life is “interpreted” by the semiologist Roland Barthes. As well as Arcimbolo’s “heads”, several works by his followers are reproduced, together with the splendid series of costumes that the artist designed for a party at the court of Rudolph II, an almost unknown testimony to his love of fashion and metamorphosis.

Arcimboldo
