Description
Alberto Martini, born in 1876, began painting at a very young age in the typical style of the late eighteen hundreds. At the age of eighteen, he discovered the clear, pure, mournful lines of China ink and almost abandoned painting for a time, while searching in the antimony of black and white for the ghosts that disturbed his imagination. His discovery of the short stories of Poe was to mark the turning point in his artistic life. After reading them, he decided to use his fine, enchanted pen to produce a pictorial equivalent of these disturbing literary fictions. This was a unique event in the history of Italian art, so little inclined towards the fantastic and the surreal. This volume gathers together all the illustrations done for Poe, along with fifteen oil and pastel works of the symbolist period.

Alberto Martini
