It is late afternoon in the Caran d'Ache workshops. The craftsmen are polishing the pens made in noble metals. The daylight slowly fades and one by one they leave. But at the far end of the workshop a light still shines through a half-open door. One polisher is still absorbed in his work; it's a new edition of Caran d'Ache's mythical pen, the Ecridor. With enormous care and patience he polishes every tiny detail on all six sides of the pen. Any marks or scratches gradually disappear, giving way to a shiny brilliance that's soft to the touch. When the evening light fades and gives no more than a nostalgic glow to the pen he decides it's time to stop work for the day. He clears up his bench and murmurs "May the moonlight give you the sheen you are still missing tonight." With these innocent words he leaves the workshop and quietly closes the door.
But someone has been listening. Eclat the fairy lives in this wondrous place that's dedicated to creating top-of-the-range writing instruments.
Here the craftsmen work together, maintaining the legend and the expertise of Caran d'Ache, Maison de Haute Ecriture. She glides through the empty workshops full of marvels and sometimes spends all night here dreaming of the wonderful materials that make this place a real fairyland: gold, silver, Chinese lacquer, mother-of-pearl, rosewood and precious stones.
Tonight, Eclat alights gently on the pen on the polisher's bench. Its hexagonal body is silver-plated, coated with rhodium, and engraved with delicate arabesques, almost like hairs fallen from the fairy's head. But she, too, thinks it lacks a certain sparkle. So in the gentle moonlight that's just strong enough for her to use her special powers, she waves her wand. In an instant, by the force of her magic, a shower of crystals is sprinkled over the pen, nestling into its curves. She takes up the pen and looks at it lovingly as the first glimmer of day creeps in through the window and sparkles on its six facets. It is time for her to leave.
