Each sterling silver buckle by Douglas Magnus starts with a two-dimensional drawing on paper. From here, one of his jewelers makes the prototype by hand, actually carve or build the piece out of silver.

A rubber mold is then made of the prototype; one mold for the silver buckle, one mold for the keeper, and one mold for the tip. Then wax is shot into the rubber mold, resulting in a wax replica. This "wax" is then set in a special type of plaster, called "investment". Once the plaster is dry it is put into a oven and heated to very high temperatures. This process vaporizes the wax, leaving a cavity inside the plaster in the shape of the silver buckle. This plaster mold is put in a centrifugal casting machine. Sterling silver is then heated to specific molten temperatures. At a precise moment the centrifugal force is released, the molten silver is thrust into the plaster mold through a channel, hopefully filling the cavity completely. The plaster mold is then removed and immediately dunked into a bucket of water, the plaster is broken off - voila! a very raw sterling silver buckle appears.

This first model is sent back to Doug for final adjustments, then returned to the casters for the final model-making process. One interesting factoid is that during the molding, waxing, casting process, the resulting buckle shrinks slightly. Through years of experience, Doug knows how to compensate for for this in the original design by making the first prototype  larger, heavier, wider than it will eventually come out to be.

All our silver buckles including the turquoise belt buckles and engraved belt buckles are then finished out by hand. The shape is refined by hand, the lines are deepened and straightened by hand, the final machine-like polish by hand.  Most of the gold accents are handmade, some are cast, and then hand-soldered to the sterling silver buckle.
