Caran D'Ache Varius Metwood Silver Plated Rhodium Coated Pens
In autumn 1999, Caran d'Ache for the first time brought together wood and metal in a particularly elegant ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil. They were named Metwood and have become a great success with lovers of unusual and distinctive writing instruments. At the PaperWorld Exhibition 2001 in Frankfurt, the Swiss company presented the newly developed fountain pen and roller/fibre-tipped pen, which join its "Varius" Special Materials Collection. With the addition of these two pens, Caran d'Ache now offers a complete set of Metwood writing instruments. Recognisable by its colour and its very fine grain, rosewood is a precious wood that comes from a rare tropical species. It presented a special challenge to Caran d’Ache craftsmen: since it is a living material that alters over time, it has to be carefully stabilized to remain in perfect condition throughout the life of the instrument. Combined with silver-plating rhodium-coating, this rare material gives the Metwood line a highly distinctive natural beauty.
The body of the Metwood pens is made of rosewood, reinforced by a brass insert. Two bands encircle the points where wood and metal meet. The fountain pen and the roller/fibre-tipped pen have ergonomically incurved writing grips and brass caps. All pens of this collection feature the distinctive "retro" steel clip. This, together with all other metal parts, are silver-plated and covered with rhodium " a rare metal more expensive than gold. Rhodium never oxidizes and will always keep its brilliant silvery sheen.
The Varius Metwood fountain pen nib is made of 18 ct rhodium-coated gold and is proposed in three nib widths: F, M and B. The pen can be used with either an ink-pump or with ink cartridges. The roller can be fitted with a rollerball cartridge or with a fibre-tipped cartridge, depending on the writing preferences of the owner.
Rosewood [cordia fragrantissima] comes from a Brazilian tree. The light-hued yellow and brownish-pink veining gives this wood a particularly striking appearance. Its rather fine grain makes it hard and strong but also difficult to work. It can split if not carefully handled. Rosewood has long been used in cabinetmaking and was particularly fashionable during the reign of Louis XVI in 18th-century France.
