To reflect Switzerland's alpine grandeur, Caran d'Ache's Matterhorn follows in the wake of the La Poya model. The two writing instruments now make up the Swiss limited edition.

Headquartered in Switzerland, Caran d'Ache not only pays tribute to the country it calls home by creating a typically Swiss writing instrument. The company has also chosen the year of the nation's founding to determine the extent of its latest limited edition: the new Matterhorn fountain pen will be limited to 1291 units. The pen's body and cap are made of brass lacquered in anthracite grey, reminiscent of the colour of rock. Two ornaments in rhodium-coated solid silver adorn the pen's body and cap. The cap depicts the majestic Matterhorn while the body reveals a pastoral scene with chalets, pine trees, goats and a Swiss flag. The clip is shaped like a cow bell and the button is crowned by an onyx gentian.

Tribute to the Matterhorn

The Matterhorn (4478 m) is the most celebrated and imposing mountain peak in Switzerland, and perhaps even in the Alps. Rising like a mythical mountain, its nearly perfect pyramidal shape with four faces and four ridges is truly unique. Climbing the Matterhorn is also the most coveted of alpine exploits. Many mountain climbers have met the challenge and scaled its legendary peak. The first to succeed was Britain's Edward Whymper in 1865. The ascent of the Matterhorn is considered very difficult and dangerous. Experienced climbers should only undertake it.

Craftsmanship at its Finest

To create the sheath destined to adorn each Matterhorn fountain pen of the Swiss limited edition, Edouard Jud, the work's co designer, cut the Swiss scene from a sheet of solid silver he then sculpted and finished by hand to afford it perfect relief and volume. He used the two original sheaths - one for the body, the other for the cap - to create moulds in which to cast the silver. Following manual touch-up, each piece extracted from the mould was then covered with a rhodium coating and delicately applied to the pen by Caran d'Ache specialists.

The Matterhorn is showcased in a distinctive round case decorated with Swiss scenery.
